Improvisation on Stage
For me improvisation on stage is the art of making conscious choices that create the conditions to dance—moment by moment—while continuously shaping context and energy through the integration of body, mind, emotions, time and space. Drawing on life experience and an attentive and sensitive body, dancers are invited to create material instantly and form it into bodily communicagtion as a structured performance.
The workshop begins with improvised solos, duets, and small-group scores, using the class as an active audience. Through guided practice, we further refine own artistic concepts and thinking, discovering that there is always more inside and that performing can be both spontaneous and precise. We refine and create new tools to compose in real time: how to enter, develop, transform, and complete an instant piece—alone, with a partner, or within a group.
To parahrase Steve Paxton: dance feels whole when everything aligns, so the moment gathers into something unmistakably shared by performer and audience.
